Survey Purpose

To Determine the Origin and Destination Travel Patterns of Auto Trips Crossing the Fairfax / Prince William County Line on the Existing Road Network during the Periods of Greatest Traffic Congestion.

Survey Methodology

  • Randomly Select License Tag Numbers of VA, DC, MD Cars, Vans, and Light Trucks
  • Match Against DMV Vehicle Registrations
  • Send Vehicle Owner Postcard Survey
  • Review and Edit Returned Surveys
  • Geocode to Trips Origins and Destinations to Transportation Analysis Super Districts
  • Expand Survey Data on VDOT Traffic Control Counts

Study Limitations

  • Results Are Based on a Random Sample - Sampling Error
  • "In-State" Autos Only
  • Late Spring / Early Summer Time of Year
  • Potential Non-Response Bias

Comparison with 1990 Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP)

  • O-D Survey Results Match Very Well, Once Household Growth and Shifts in Regional Employment Since 1990 are Taken into Account.
  • Comparison with CTPP Validates O-D Survey Results and that the Survey Results are Representative of Normal Peak Period Auto Travel Across the Fairfax County / Prince William County Line.

O-D Survey is Only a Snapshot

The 1998 Survey is only a Snap Shot of Current Travel Patterns of Peak Period Auto Trips Crossing the Fairfax / Prince William County Line. This Study Does Not Address the Issues of Proposed Transportation Changes or Land Use Projections.
