| October 10, 2002 Documentary to Highlight Occoquan Watershed |
|
In conjunction with National Watershed Monitoring Weekend, Oct. 18-20, Fairfax County Cable Channel 16 will feature a special program "Occoquan: End of the Water." The video commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors decision to downzone 41,000 acres of the watershed in Fairfax County to limit pollution-causing development.
Twenty years ago, the land in the watershed was in danger of becoming heavily developed and the water supply severely compromised by pollution. Since one-third of Fairfax Countys water supply is drawn from the Occoquan Watershed, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors tried to protect the area by limiting new construction. Their decision to downzone the area was immediately challenged in court by a consortium of real estate developers. After three years of litigation, the arguments presented by Fairfax County won the day. The decision has withstood numerous challenges since that time. This documentary celebrates the history of the Occoquan, the twentieth anniversary of that landmark decision and Fairfax Countys continuing efforts to preserve and protect the Occoquan Watershed for future generations. "Occoquan: End of the Water" will begin airing on Channel 16 on Friday, Oct. 18 and will air Mondays at 10:15 p.m.; Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:15 p.m.; and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:15 p.m. For more information on this or any other Channel 16 program, check your Channel 16 program guide, visit the Web site at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dtcs/channel16, or call the Communications Production Division at 703-324-5930, TTY: 703-222-8653.
